A story of firsts, family, and the power of representation
There are moments in business when you realize you're not just building a company—you're building history.
On April 9th, 2026, Curls Poppin' officially launched on Walmart.com. To many, it's just another product listing. To Ashley and Lindsey Head, it's the culmination of a side hustle that outgrew their day jobs—and a promise kept to four little boys watching their every move.
The Power Couple Behind the Brand
Meet Ashley and Lindsey Head—a powerhouse couple from San Diego, California who were thriving in biotech and finance respectively. They had the degrees, the titles, the stability. What they didn't have was a doll that looked like their family.
So they built one.
What started as a passion project—creating dolls that celebrated natural hair and Black culture—quickly became something bigger. While Ashley navigated the corporate biotech world and Lindsey managed finance, they spent their nights and weekends building Curls Poppin' from their kitchen table.
They did it with four sons watching. Learning. Dreaming.
And when you're building something with four boys seeing every setback, every late night, every leap of faith—failure is not an option.
The side hustle took off. And when it did, they chose courage over comfort.
The First of Many Firsts
Curls Poppin' isn't just another doll line. We're the world's first natural hair fashion doll line created by a hair product company—a bridge between beauty care and play that no one had crossed before.
We're also proud to be the first and only dolls sold in Historically Black College and University bookstores, bringing representation to spaces that have long celebrated Black excellence. And now, as the licensed doll line for Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, we carry the legacy of service, sisterhood, and scholarship into the hands of the next generation.
Why This Matters
Representation isn't a marketing strategy. It's a mirror.
When a child holds a Curls Poppin' doll, they're not just playing—they're seeing themselves celebrated. They're learning that their natural hair is beautiful, that their culture is worthy of shelf space, that their stories deserve to be told.
And when that doll sits in an HBCU bookstore, it whispers to every student walking by: "You belong here. You always have."
From Side Hustle to Walmart Shelves
Ashley and Lindsey didn't have the marketing budgets of legacy toy giants. What they had was something far more valuable: a vision that wouldn't quit, four sons who deserved to see what perseverance looks like, and a community that believed in them.
Every share, every purchase, every word of encouragement from their fans carried this family-owned San Diego company from a dream to Walmart.com. From local hair shows to HBCU campuses to one of the world's largest retailers.
This is what happens when you build with purpose. When two professionals bet on themselves. When you refuse to accept "that's never been done" as a reason not to try.
When four little boys are watching—and failure is not an option.
What's Next
2026 is their year of scaling—of taking these many firsts and turning them into a foundation. The Heads are expanding their HBCU partnerships, growing their Delta Sigma Theta collection, and reaching families who have been waiting far too long for dolls that reflect their reality.
To everyone who has supported them: thank you. You're not just customers. You're co-creators of a movement.
To those just discovering them: welcome. The best chapters are still being written.
And to their four sons: this is what happens when you refuse to quit.
